Illinois senior Kelvin Hayden is on the verge of accomplishing the rare statistical feat of leading the team in a major offensive category one season and a major defensive category the next.
As a wide receiver last season, Hayden led the Illini with 52 receptions.
This season he was converted to cornerback and is the team leader in interceptions with four going into the season’s final game Nov. 20 at Northwestern.
Hayden said he believes this versatility will be advantageous when he tries to move up to the professional level.
“It shows I can make an impact on both sides of the football,” he said. “Coach [Ron] Turner does a great job of putting guys in great situations.”
Five players are tied for second in interceptions with one apiece–Jordan Taman, Morris Virgil, Mike Gawelek, Charles Bailey, Jr. and Justin Harrison.
