Earlimart

Treble & Tremble

Channeling a deeply mourned Elliott Smith, be it intentional or not, Earlimart songwriter Aaron Espinoza’s sweet, breathy delivery will feed that gaping wound in the hearts of many an indie-rock fan. The bulk of the songs’ subject matter–suffering, yearning for love and lamenting its loss–are perfectly in line with Smith’s work. Considering the army of dutiful Smith fans, this is a potentially dangerous venture–fail and you’ll enrage a mass of music lovers, but success may neatly usher them into your corner. Because Earlimart injects this fallen star’s essence into an operational, full-fledged band of stand-up musicians, not to mention their already staked-out, respected place within the scene (thanks to past releases), the latter is the most probable outcome. After all, who can resist a dreamy, meaty, blip-bleep-enhanced version of translucent purity?
