The Gourds
Blood of the Ram
The Austin, Texas, band plays a boozy mix of roots-music styles: There’s the zydeco sound of “Do 4 U,” the bluesy ballad “Illegal Oyster” and the Waylon Jennings-influenced title track. There’s at least a hint of normalcy in most of the songs, but it pretty much runs out by the last one, the inscrutable “Turd in My Pocket.” Undoubtedly the product of a beer-fueled, late-night jam session, the tune might be about a corrupt law-enforcement agent. As long as the Gourds are laughing up their sleeves, you may as well laugh with them.
Take away: Bloody fun
