Cake
Pressure Chief
How Cake ever managed to parlay its ultrasardonic pop ditties into a prolific career is anyone’s guess, but no one’s complaining, either. Each Cake album can be relied upon for a few more oddly ingenious hip-hop and trumpet infused confections, and “Pressure Chief” is no exception. The heavy hitters here are the g-funk single “No Phone,” the whimsical “Dime” and the breezy “Palm of Your Hand,” but there’s plenty of other songs worth picking through until the band finally compiles a much-needed best-of. In the meantime, Cake deserves a lot of wink-wink credit for covering “Guitar Man”–appropriately enough, a song by Bread.
