The Hidden Cameras
Mississauga Goddam
How does one follow up an album the band itself called a collection of “gay folk church music”? In the case of Canada’s Hidden Cameras, simply record more of the same. Like a cross between Belle and Sebastian and the Magnetic Fields before Stephin Merritt got too haughty, “Mississauga Goddam” is full of wonderful orchestral pop, the oft-pastoral songs not quite sabotaged by Joel Gibb’s self-consciously pornographic lyrical turns. But Gibb isn’t out to shock: From the blasphemous but beautiful “That’s When the Ceremony Starts” to the title track, he’s just trying to find his place in the world.
