We admit that Joey’s Brickhouse isn’t the sort of place that young hipsters run to. Surrounded by an increasing muddle of new Lakeview townhomes, it has a distinctly suburban vibe. And though Joey’s promotes a “Hangover Brunch,” the folks we saw dining didn’t look like repentant partyers but new parents, babies in tow. (The service, however, is pure urban insouciance: “What’s up?” the waiter shrugged when he got around to shuffling toward our table.) So why go? Chef/owner Joey Morelli is an alumnus of Santa Monica’s famous Border Grill (among other spots) and it shows: He turns simple fare like a Cajun scramble into an uncommonly good treat packed with andouille sausage, serrano chilis and roasted bell peppers ($8.50); his big fat Belgian waffles come piled with seasonal berries. A sturdy, savory Bloody Mary ($6.50) is garnished with a hearty skewered salad of pepperoncini, carrots, celery and an olive. It’s the perfect way to squelch your hangover, or start a new one. 1258 W. Belmont Ave. 773-296-1300.
