If you would like to help your young daughter counter American society’s preoccupation with skin-deep beauty, check out New Moon: The Magazine for Girls and Their Dreams.
The bimonthly, started 12 years ago by parents Nancy Gruver and Joe Kelly and their daughters, Nia and Mavis, is looking for girls between the ages of 8 and 14 who radiate inner beauty to profile in its sixth annual “25 Beautiful Girls” issue.
Girls and adults are invited to send nominating essays of no more than 300 words explaining why a girl they know is beautiful for who she is and what she does. The deadline is Nov. 1.
The aim of the contest is to honor girls who overcome personal difficulties, fight against injustice, stand firm in their beliefs or simply are good-hearted people, said Michelle Rowley, New Moon’s communications coordinator.
