Eastern Illinois made what coach Bob Spoo called “a complete reversal” from a 49-6 loss Oct. 9 at Eastern Kentucky to Saturday’s 24-9 homecoming victory over Murray State. Now Spoo has another challenge for his players.

“It’s imperative that we win on the road if we’re going to remain in the hunt for the [Ohio Valley] conference championship,” he said.

The Panthers (3-3, 2-1) get that chance Saturday when they play at Tennessee-Martin. Eastern’s defense, especially linebacker Jamarr Day and cornerback Ben Brown, encouraged Spoo last weekend. Day led the Panthers with 12 tackles. Brown knocked down six passes and had two tackles for losses. The defense limited Murray State to 148 rushing yards and 231 total yards.

On offense, Vincent Webb rushed for 191 yards and two touchdowns, one of 90 yards. Matt Schabert completed 14 of 25 passes for 180 yards, a touchdown and no interceptions.
