The Libertines

The Libertines

The Libertines self-titled second album may be the first album in history to arrive with an official disclaimer that the disc was a rush job. The band’s primary singer/guitarist/songwriter Pete Doherty has been dealing very publicly with a drug problem, and producer Mick Jones wasn’t sure he could be counted on in the studio for more than one or two takes. Even a half-power Libertines has plenty to offer, given that their shambling quality accounts for much of the band’s appeal, but “The Libertines” still sounds like a b-sides and outtakes collection compared to the group’s rousing debut “Up the Bracket.” The element missing is just the thing that drugs often eliminate–focus.
