Quarterback Brett Basanez was held out of practice for a second day Wednesday but was cleared to play Saturday against Ohio State and is expected to start.

Basanez was in uniform but stayed on the sidelines while Chris Malleo ran the offense.

The decision was to give Basanez’s sore right shoulder, injured in the loss at Minnesota, another day of rest while allowing Malleo to get extra preparation.

Basanez “knows the offense, and I’m confident he has a good handle on what we’re doing,” coach Randy Walker said.

The Wildcats will replace injured kick returner Derell Jenkins, out for the season with a broken wrist, with freshman Brandon Roberson, the eighth all-time leading rusher in Texas Class 5A history (5,235 yards). Roberson will pair with Jeff Backes, who returned a kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown at Minnesota.
