With “The West Wing” potentially on the back end of its term, NBC has begun developing another drama set in Washington’s halls of power.
From the sound of it, though, the new project will be a far cry from the idealistic tone of “The West Wing.”
The show, from “The Shield” creator Shawn Ryan and “Charmed” writer-producer Mark Wilding, would follow a first-term congressman eager to climb the Washington ladder, even if it means doing things that aren’t strictly legal.
“It’s a comic, caustic one-hour look at what we fear Washington politics is really like as opposed to what we’d like it to be,” Ryan tells The Hollywood Reporter.
NBC has given a script commitment to the project. The deal brings Ryan back together with NBC Entertainment president Kevin Reilly, who greenlit “The Shield” when he was at FX.

The script is the first collaboration between Ryan and Wilding, who has also worked on “Jake 2.0” and “The Naked Truth.”
