The Secondman’s Middle Stand
A lot has happened to Mike Watt since the release of the former Minuteman’s last solo album. He played bass with the Stooges, reunited with Minutemen and fIREHOSE drummer George Hurley, and suffered through a painful burst abscess in the perineum. “The Secondman’s Middle Stand” is a bit of a concept album about his illness and recovery, and it’s nice to have the gruff punk legend back in action. On the other hand, the disc–recorded over just a few days with the minimal instrumentation of drums, bass and organ–sometimes makes for a tough listen.
