Don’t look for the Wildcats to pair Noah Herron and Terrell Jordan in the same backfield, despite the contrast the 230-pound Herron and 200-pound Jordan offer.

The problem is that unlike last season when Herron and Jordan backed up Jared Wright, the Wildcats don’t have a strong No. 3 back and “all of a sudden, if one guy gets hurt early in the game, now you have your whole game plan in [two backs],” coach Randy Walker said. “I’m just not sure we have enough backs to get into two-back [operations]. Not to say we won’t from time to time.”

Northwestern has been 55-45 percent pass through three games, meaning more opportunities for three-receiver than two-back sets. But even as Herron is set in the No. 1 spot, Jordan has shown coaches what they want from a Big Ten back.

“I like guys who will take it to you,” Walker said.
