Des Plaines aldermen have raised the salary of City Clerk Donna McAllister to $60,000 from $47,500.

McAllister, who has been elected city clerk in Des Plaines for 22 years, had been the second-lowest paid clerk among 17 clerks in Illinois municipalities of similar size, officials said.

The raise is part of a new pay scale for subsequent city clerks. After an election, any new city clerk would begin at an annual salary of $47,500. Over eight years, the salary would increase to $60,000.

During the Monday night City Council meeting, aldermen also voted 8-0 to keep the mayor’s annual salary at $9,600. Aldermen will continue to receive $3,000.

In other business, aldermen voted 8-0 to accept Mayor Tony Arredia’s recommendation to appoint Deputy Fire Chief John Heavey as the successor to retiring Fire Chief Tom Farinella, who has run the Fire Department since 1993.

Heavey has worked for the Fire Department since 1974 and will be sworn in Oct. 1, officials said.
