Turn
Someone unfamiliar with the Ex might mistake the group’s latest album “Turn” for any one of the many bands (Sonic Youth, Fugazi) at least partly indebted to the Dutch anarchist punk collective’s distinctive racket. But sticking around for 25 years does earn The Ex bragging rights, and “Turn” is definitely something worth bragging about. Over the course of two discs, the group shapes undeniably rhythmic compositions layered with churning guitars and shouted lyrics. If that makes the music sound tough to stomach, it’s not. In its own inimitable way, The Ex is pretty funky, providing cacophonous dance music for the picket lines.
