Flogging Molly

Within a Mile of Home

Like the Pogues, Flogging Molly manages to match old-country poetry and passion with the kind of monster hooks that make the crowd go nuts, drunk or not. In fact, from “Seven Deadly Sins” to story songs such as “Tobacco,” “Within a Mile of Home” will make even the most been-there, done-that music fan weepy-eyed for the prime of Shane MacGowan, so redolent is the disc of those ramshackle, reckless days of Pogues yore. But there’s also a sensitive side to the band, as heard in “Whistles the Wind” and “Don’t Let Me Die Still Wondering.” Plus, what other punk band could pull off a duet with Lucinda Williams, as Flogging Molly does on “Factory Girls”?
