What do you do for an encore? If you’re running back Travis Glasford or his Western Illinois teammates the answer is “nothing as dazzling as last week.”
The Leathernecks, playing subs virtually the entire second half, buried overmatched Cheyney 98-7. Glasford, a 190-pound junior from Miami, played only the first 22 minutes, yet he rushed for 229 yards in 24 carries and scored six touchdowns. In the first quarter, he gained 142 yards in 15 tries and capped Western’s first five drives with touchdowns.
Glasford–surprise!–was named Gateway Conference offensive player of the week. . . .
For the second week in a row, quarterbacks Adam Smith and Steve LaFalce logged almost identical numbers. In Western’s loss at Nebraska, Smith completed 10 passes for 111 yards. LaFalce completed 10 for 112 yards. Last week, each of them went 5 of 6, Smith for 70 yards and LaFalce for 68.
