player ready...New Trier is known for its doubles teams in girls tennis, with two back from top-eight finishes in the state tournament a year ago.
But junior Jesse Adler, the Trevians’ No. 1 singles player, already has one state quarterfinal appearance, having finished fourth as a freshman. And comebacks are becoming her specialty.
In a dual meet Sept. 9 against Highland Park, Adler dropped the first set to Julie Flanzer before rallying for a victory.
At the Deerfield Invitational last Saturday, Adler defeated Barrington’s Jessica Linden in the opening set of the title match before losing the second. Linden took a 5-3 lead in the third set and served for match point. But Adler came back to win the match 6-1, 3-6, 7-5.
“She’s shown me some resiliency in terms of her ability to overcome tough situations,” New Trier coach Jerry Morse-Karzen said.
Surgery for Marable
Results of a bone scan on Hinsdale South sophomore Taylor Marable confirmed a fracture of the hook of the hamate bone in her right hand. Marable, who finished third at the state tennis meet in singles as a freshman, will undergo surgery at the end of the month and is expected to miss the entire season.

Wild ride for Mustangs
Second-ranked Downers Grove South had never won an opening-round game, much less the title, at the Great Midwest Soccer Classic. But the Mustangs did both last weekend at Indianapolis’ North Central High School.
Downers South (8-1-2) defeated St. Louis Chaminade 2-1 and tied Carmichael (Calif.) Jesuit to advance to the finals against the host school. After a 0-0 tie, the Mustangs prevailed 3-0 in a shootout.
Kevin Harrigan, Anthony Marchese, Kyle Petricek and Jim Azriel plus goalkeeper Jason Curry combined for a solid defense. Forward Mike McCormack led the Mustangs with a goal and an assist. Harrigan and midfielder Andrew Lichaj were named to the all-tournament team.

Game on
While New Trier’s 6-foot-3-inch Katherine Dykstra has made a volleyball commitment to Wisconsin, there’s no truth to the rumor that she’ll skip her senior year of basketball.
“People start those rumors when they don’t see her with us during the summer,” New Trier coach Teri Rodgers said. Dykstra, who also excels in track (2002 state discus champ), spent only about a week and a half playing basketball over the summer.
Double duty
St. Viator junior Ashley Fratto had a full day last Saturday. In the morning she finished 14th in the Lake Park cross-country invitational. Then she headed for Hoops the Gym in Chicago to play in the Adidas Girls Basketball Jamboree.

A new commitment
Senior John Matheson is the starting running back for Lake Forest Academy, and he’ll run track next spring, but his ability to score goals on the ice landed the Ontario native at the north suburban prep school.
The school will field two hockey teams this season: a varsity that will play in the Metro North, and a prep team that will play in the Midwest Prep League, which features Loyola Gold and teams from Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Buffalo and Canada.

Matheson is one of several recruited to play for the Caxys’ prep team, which will be coached by Craig Barnett.
Other prep team newcomers when the season starts at the end of October include senior forward Kyle Locke and junior defenseman Bill Pinel.
Paul Novak is the Caxys’ new varsity coach after spending the last three seasons in the same role at Lake Forest High School.
