John Randolph Donnell, a banker, oilman and philanthropist, has died at his summer home in Newport, R.I., of complications from Alzheimer’s disease.

He died Sept. 8 at age 92.

His grandfather James Donnell, a lifelong friend of John D. Rockefeller’s, founded the Ohio Oil Co. The company, which became Marathon Oil, was part of the Rockefeller Standard Oil Trust.

Mr. Donnell was born in 1912 in Findlay, Ohio. He earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Case Institute of Technology, now Case Western Reserve University, in 1934.

He began his business career with Marathon Oil in 1936, eventually becoming the company’s president of international relations and senior vice president of finance and planning.

He also served 35 years as president of the First National Bank of Findlay.

Mr. Donnell’s greatest interest, however, was the Boy Scouts of America. He was a member of its national executive board for many years.
