The City Council is seeking applicants to fill the seat left by 1st Ward Ald. Richard Hart’s death last month, nearly a year after replacing another deceased alderman.

“It’s ironic that just about a year ago we were in this same situation, with a resignation [of 1st Ward Ald. John Hankes] and another untimely death,” said Mayor Jeff Schielke as he formally declared the vacancy Sept. 7. Hart died after a heart attack Aug. 15; 5th Ward Ald. Norman Hagemann died Sept. 1, 2003.

Schielke said he will accept applications to fill Hart’s seat until 5 p.m. Monday. The City Council will interview applicants Sept. 28, then each alderman will rank them in order of preference. Schielke said he will appoint the applicant who gets the highest total ranking from the council.

Applicants for Hart’s seat must be 21 or older; must have lived in the 1st Ward for at least a year; must be registered to vote in Kane County; and must not be a convicted felon.
