The Naperville City Council Tuesday endorsed a plan outlining steps to complete the Millennium Carillon.

The council’s support and expected support from the Naperville Park District Board will set a new fundraising campaign in motion to pay for the completion of the 72-bell carillon.

The plan is the creation of a Millennium Carillon Foundation Board that includes two City Council members and two Park Board members.

According to the plan, private fundraising will pay for operating costs for the coming year; architect, engineer and contractor fees; and consultant fees to create a fundraising campaign to pay for the construction work.

The outline also shows an incremental time frame with goals and a completion date of June 6, 2006, the 175th anniversary of the founding of Naperville.

Brien Nagle, chairman of the Millennium Carillon Foundation Board, said the work plan “identifies a process to confirm the construction costs and exact bid amounts.”

The plan also alludes to future discussions about maintenance and ownership of the carillon. The instrument sits on city land that is leased to the Park District.
