A loose pit bull among a crowd of people is rarely a good thing.

That proved true over the Labor Day weekend in Palos Hills when a pit bull attacked a 6-month-old Boston terrier who was being walked by its owner in the Riviera town homes in the 8500 block of West 111th Street.
The terrier’s owner was bitten when she tried to separate the dogs, and a 14-year-old girl was injured when a neighbor picked up a bat to try to subdue the pit bull, but hit the girl in the head instead.
Police calmed the situation without any serious injuries to all concerned, said Deputy Police Chief Steven Good.
“Our guys did a good job,” he said. “They were out there and took control of the situation. It was pretty much a mess out there.”
The teen, whom Good would not identify, was treated in Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn. The owner of the Boston terrier declined medical treatment, but her dog was taken to a veterinarian for treatment.
The owner of the pit bull, Michael Lapacinskas, who also lives in the townhouse complex, was cited for allowing the animal to run loose and failure to buy a city dog tag.
Good said the pit bull was taken to a veterinarian for rabies testing and observation. Lapacinskas may have the dog returned to him, Good said.
