A 22-year-old Melrose Park man gunned down in a school parking lot was identified publicly Tuesday, but police said they have made no arrests in the death.

Jermen Ocegueda of the 1700 block of North 21st Avenue was shot Monday afternoon after quarreling with a man in the student parking lot across the street from Proviso East High School. Police said the incident may be gang-related.

About 2:30 p.m., Ocegueda was waiting to pick up his brother, a student at Proviso East. During the quarrel, the other man pulled a gun and Ocegueda was shot once, according to police. The suspect, who may have been accompanied by others, fled in a tan Buick, police said.

A friend drove Ocegueda to Loyola University Medical Center a few blocks away, where he later died. A Cook County medical examiner spokesman said an autopsy will be conducted Wednesday.

The homicide was the eighth of the year in Maywood, which has a population of about 27,000 and had a record 20 homicides in 2003. Officials said they have been working hard to keep violent crime down.

“We were hoping we wouldn’t have any more [murders] this year,” said Brian Black, spokesman for the Maywood Police Department. “We’re trying our best to solve this one.”

Police said they had talked to witnesses who gave them names of people to interview.
