Northern State

All City

Northern State’s EP “Dying in Stereo” probably should have been left a one-off. After all, a female version of the Beastie Boys–replete with ridiculous rhymes and New Yawk-centric attitude–is only so much of a novelty. But no, the trio has gone ahead and recorded a full-length album. Fortunately, there are some big names behind the beats: Cypress Hills’ DJ Muggs and Roots mastermind estlove offer sonic guidance. The lyrics remain as silly as ever, including a litany that rhymes “Ben and Jerry,” “less ordinary,” “Staten Island Ferry.” And no, those words don’t make much sense in context either.
