What: Viva! Chicago Latin Music Festival, Grant Park, 300 S. Columbus Drive; 10:30 a.m.-9:30 p.m. Sat.-Sun.; free; 312-744-3370. www.cityofchicago.org/specialevents.
What else: Chicago Jazz Festival, Monday through Sept. 5; 312-744-3315 or 312-427-1676. www.cityofchicago.org/specialevents.
Why: The city’s summer concert festival season is coming to a close with the sounds of tambours and saxophones with the Viva! Chicago Latin Music Festival this weekend and the expanded Chicago Jazz Festival beginning Monday and running through Sept. 5.
Latin Music Fest: This year’s festival main stage will be headlined by Obie Bermudez and Ednita Nazario; Axe Bahia, Los Alacranes Musical and Super Uba y El Bachatin will also perform. The immense popularity of today’s Latin music make this one of the Midwest’s largest Latin music events.
Jazz Fest: It’s all about legends. On Friday, a tribute to Count Basie will be performed by the New Kansas City 7; a tribute to Coleman Hawkins on Saturday will feature the Bennie Wallace Nonet; and Butch Thompson will pay tribute to Fats Waller on Sunday. The free concerts at Grant Park, 300 S. Columbus Drive, begin at noon Sept. 3-5; 312-744-3370.
In keeping with the legends theme, Dee Dee Bridgewater will perform at 8 p.m. Thursday at Symphony Center, 220 S. Michigan Ave. ($12-$49; 312-294-3000) with “A Tribute to the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra.”
To extend the festival even further, Kurt Elling and the Chicago Jazz Orchestra play 6:30 p.m. Monday in a free concert at the Pritzker Pavilion; and tenor saxophonist Ravi Coltrane’s “Reflections on ‘A Love Supreme’ ” is 8 p.m. Tuesday in the Harris Theater ($15-$45).
Forecast: Flood warning. The crowd at the Latin Music Festival will overflow with dancers swaying to the merengue and more. And the seven-day Chicago Jazz Festival ensures there is more than enough jazz to go around.
