Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

You can burn candles, but they’re kind of ’90s. Sprays can be medicinal. Incense is so ’60s. And boiling apple cider on the stove takes time.

So how do you make your home smell cozy, create a romantic mood or calm your psyche? Febreze offers multiple scents you can play like a CD.

The makers of the hit fabric-refresher spray have set out to advance the home-freshening category with Scentstories, a plug-in appliance about the size of a large tissue box, into which one of five themed gel-implant discs is inserted.

Press Play, and the “exploring a mountain trail” disc moves through each of five scents every half-hour, which waft out as the hidden fan hums. “Following the winding creek” leads to “walking beside wildflowers.” The summit is “gazing at the tall firs.”

The disc’s progression of complementary scents is meant to avoid olfactory doldrums and to spin a storyline or stir a memory.

Available at Target, WalMart and Jewel, the Scentstories starter kit is $34.99, which includes the player and the mountain trail disc. Parent company Procter & Gamble suggests a retail price of $5.99 for additional discs, such as “strolling through the garden.” Each disc lasts for 20 plays, or 50 hours, for a cost of about 12 cents an hour. (The machine shuts off automatically after a disc’s cycle.)
