Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Chicagoans have it tough. In January, complexions resemble dried-out bread crust. And in August, people cruise around the city with what looks like a gallon of Texas crude schmeared across their faces.

Chicago humidity could have been the motivation behind R.E.M.’s famed lyrics “shiny, happy people holding hands.”

There are two ways to issue a cease-and-desist order to your pores: oil-free moisturizers and matte-producing powders.

I (like Drew Barrymore and Deborah Messing) swear by Sonya Dakar’s seaweed liposome gel ($50 at Urban She, 1 E. Oak St.), which forms a protective barrier between the slimy environment and the skin under makeup.

Beauty gurus also favor L’Oreal Pure Zone Skin Relief Oil-Free Moisturizer, ($7.19 at Ulta) and Prescriptives All You Need Oil Absorbing Lotion SPF 15, ($40 at www.prescriptives.com), which both reduce shine.

Benefit’s dr. feelgood beauty balm ($24 at Bloomingdales) is an on-the-go solution that can be applied under or over makeup to sop up unsightly oily residues. Also, keep in mind that pressed powders should be feather light and match your foundation. My favorites are Awake Day Matteness, ($35 at Sephora) and Iman Perfect Response Oil Blotting Pressed Powder ($13.99 at drugstores). Both leave a sheer, natural-looking finish.
