Kings of Convenience
Riot on an Empty Street
For years, Norway fostered a reputation as the epicenter of death metal. Perhaps it was inevitable, then, that the nation’s pop music claim to fame should gravitate toward the other extreme, with wimpy rock like Sondre Lerche and Kings of Convenience. “Riot on an Empty Street,” Kings of Convenience’s third album, starts off with principal members Erik Glambek Boe and guitarist Erlend Oye sounding like a Scandinavian Simon & Garfunkel, but quickly the specter of Nick Drake (among other moody antecedents) looms large. Maybe that’s to be expected from the land of dark, gloomy winters. Either way, there are worse influences to ape, and KoC provides the perfect down-beat soundtrack to anyone’s gloom.
