DuPage County Forest Preserve District commissioners have approved an intergovernmental agreement with the City of Naperville and the Naperville Park District to convey about 6.4 acres in Pioneer Park to the city for a proposed intersection expansion at Washington and 75th Streets.
The roadway improvements will require additional right of way north of Hobson Road inside the park, owned by the Forest Preserve District and leased by the Park District.
In exchange for the land, the city will build what is estimated to be a $500,000 trail underpass at 75th Street for the Naperville Riverway trail. The city also agreed to relocate a 32-car asphalt parking lot in Pioneer Park that will be affected by the intersection expansion.
The $16.5 million roadway project, approved by the Naperville City Council in June, will add a through lane, a second left-turn lane and a dedicated right-turn lane to each leg of the intersection. Both Washington and 75th Streets now are four-lane roads with left-turn lanes.
Plans for the project have been submitted to the Illinois Department of Transportation and are undergoing review. If approved, construction is expected to begin in spring 2006 and last about 18 months.
