A Park Forest village employee is accused of stealing more than $100,000 in village funds.

The Cook County state’s attorney’s office last week charged Steven M. Landin of unincorporated University Park with theft, said Mary Dankowski, director of the village’s Finance Department.

“We demand strict honesty from all our employees and in return we trust them with the public’s money,” Dankowski said. “Mr. Landin violated all the standards placed in him.”

Landin is suspected of falsifying bank deposits on village accounts in his 10-year employment.

The probe into Landin’s alleged activities began earlier this month when another Finance Department employee discovered a shortage in one of Landin’s accounts, officials said.

Landin was fired on Friday, officials said (this sentence as published has been corrected in this text).
