The Sadies

Favourite Colours

No one has ever expected the Sadies to reinvent the wheel, so no one will be shocked that the Canadian group’s fifth album offers more of the same ol’ thing. But the Sadies sure make the same ol’ thing sound great. “Favourite Colours” is full of twanged-out instrumentals and laid-back, harmony-rich songs, equally influenced by country-rock and psychedelia, part the Byrds and part Pink Floyd, with hints of spaghetti western soundtracks floating around as well. Special guest Robyn Hitchcock sounds right at home singing the album closer “Why Would Anybody Live Here?” but the preceding dozen songs come across just as strong, at once cinematic, mysterious and unfailingly melodic.

Take away: Canadian twang
