Michael Phelps’ victory in the 400-meter individual medley was the highlight of swimming’s first day, which inevitably was filled with cheers and tears.

American Katie Hoff, 15, bombed in her morning preliminary of the 400 IM and failed to make the finals. But Brendan Hansen and Mark Gangloff of the U.S. moved easily through their heats and into Tuesday’s final of the 100 breaststroke.

The U.S. women’s 400 freestyle relay team finished a disappointing second after Australia’s Jodie Henry swam down Jenny Thompson on the anchor leg.

But Kaitlin Sandeno of the U.S. grabbed a surprising silver while finishing a close second to Ukrainian world record-holder Yana Klochkova in the 400 IM.

And Australian legend Ian Thorpe successfully defended the title he won in Sydney by taking the 400 freestyle in a pedestrian 3:43.10.

The time was more than three seconds slower than his world record, but that hardly concerned him.

“I’m more excited at the fact that it’s over,” Thorpe said after finishing ahead of teammate Grant Hackett and bronze medalist Klete Keller of the U.S. “Now there is some relief for my shoulders. This is much harder to defend than to gain.”

Phelps has a busy Sunday ahead of him, with heats and the semifinals in the 200 freestyle as well as heats and the final in the 400 freestyle relay.
