Live ’72
For most of the past 30 years, the Flatlanders have been just a footnote as the short-lived band that launched the careers of left-of-center country artists Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Joe Ely and Butch Hancock. Now that the band is back in action, it’s ironic that they should issue a live album from 1972, but it’s hard to complain. In fact, given that the band stuck together for less than a year and played only a handful of shows, it’s amazing this album of mostly eclectic covers (Hank Williams, Townes Van Zandt, Sam Cooke, Bob Dylan) exists at all, which only adds to its warbling, wobbly, mysterious appeal.
