Pakistani-Americans living in the Bolingbrook area will celebrate the 57th anniversary of their native country’s independence Saturday with a flag-raising ceremony and appearances by Atizaz Ahmed, the new Pakistan consul general in Chicago, and Oak Brook resident Navid Musharraf, brother of Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf.
The event is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. in front of Village Hall, 375 W. Briarcliff Rd. There will be speeches and the Pakistani national anthem will be performed.
Several hundred Pakistani families live in Bolingbrook and attend a mosque in the community. Organizers say Bolingbrook is the only municipality in the country that holds such a flag-raising ceremony. The celebration has been an annual tradition in the village since 1991.
