There are secrets and lies in “We Don’t Live Here Anymore,” starring Naomi Watts, Mark Ruffalo, Laura Dern and Peter Krause.

At last week’s premiere at the Directors’ Guild in Hollywood, Ruffalo and Watts spoke of the creative team spirit brought on by their collaboration as executive producers.

“It really was a chance to exercise creative control and keep the vision,” said Ruffalo, whose star rose with “You Can Count on Me” and who knows the indie ropes. “Independent films are now like studio films. It’s hard to get a project going without a big name attached. But bigger names shy away from indie projects, unless they’re Naomi Watts.”

Watts was shooting “21 Grams” when director John Curran asked her to do “We Don’t Live Here Anymore,” and she said she couldn’t imagine doing another emotionally draining drama. “Then John proposed being a producer, and, while I wasn’t involved in the developmental stage, I did enjoy getting to make creative decisions,” Watts said.

Curran says having actors as producers makes shooting easier.

The film is scheduled to open in Chicago on Aug. 20.
