Scissor Sisters

Scissor Sisters

It was only a matter of time before New York’s hipsters turned from cool post-punk to uncool ’70s lite rock. Given that no one imagined the band’s fluke cover of Pink Floyd’s “Comfortably Numb” would hit, Scissor Sisters feels like a goof gone awry. Sounding like a cross between the Bee Gees and Elton John (too much of a good bad thing), the band’s debut is camp one moment and sincere the next, but most of the time it hovers uncomfortably in the middle. “Take Your Mama Out” puts the ugh in smug, while “Filthy/Gorgeous” is catchy yet contemptuous of anyone who would shell out cash for something this half-assed. More power to them for riding a one-note joke up the charts, but they shouldn’t buy that yellow Lamborghini just yet.

Take away: Faux funk
