One Plus One is One
Damon Gough–a.k.a. Badly Drawn Boy–hit one out of the park with his wonderful debut “The Hour of Bewilderbeast,” and his soundtrack to the film “About a Boy” wasn’t far behind. Alas, the downside of setting the bar so high is the disappointment and frustration that follows when that bar isn’t met. If Badly Drawn Boy’s passable last album “Have You Fed the Fish?” was overproduced and overarranged, “One Plus One is One” errs in the other direction, with unadventurous piano and acoustic guitar-led songs that rarely shake out of their stupor. A mere handful of tracks manage to escape the dull pull of Gough’s sudden and uncompelling mood swing.
