Neurosis

The Eye of Every Storm

Alt-rock permanently blurred the line between metal and hard rock, but that stylistic purgatory has let a lot of bands sneak up from the underground to find slightly larger audiences. Neurosis is hardly a household name. But among metal fans, the West Coast band remains one of the few sure things in the world of big riffs and heavy drums. Of course, things are rarely that clear-cut in the world of Neurosis, as “The Eye of Every Storm” demonstrates. The disc veers from distorted squalls and pummeling drums to stretches of calm and atmosphere, as indebted to psychedelic music and prog rock as it is to more traditional metal. It’s like a no-nonsense, more independent-minded Tool intent on toeing the line between the brutal and the beautiful.
