Berwyn aldermen on Tuesday unanimously agreed to increase the city’s no-bid limit to $10,000.
For years, Berwyn’s ordinance called for a competitive bid process for supplies, materials and services exceeding $5,000.
“As inflation goes, we just haven’t kept up with the times; the $5,000 just didn’t seem to be adequate,” said Paul Nosek, Berwyn’s director of finance.
Nosek said city aldermen and department heads for some time had been discussing the no-bid threshold.
“A plow on a truck costs $6,000,” Nosek said. “In order to avoid some of the cost problems these guys were running into, we decided to change it.”
The city’s no-bid limit of $10,000 is in line with most area municipalities.
In River Forest, any spending of $5,000 or more requires competitive bidding. In Oak Park, the limit is $25,000.
Cicero may hire vendors for work that costs up to $50,000 without soliciting bids.
