They Might Be Giants
The Spine

Novelty bands generally don’t last 20 years, so there’s obviously something more going on with regard to They Might Be Giants’ lasting appeal. You can hear it in the goofy appeal of “The Spine,” the duo’s 10th album. It’s also the group’s first with producer Pat Dillett since its breakthrough album “Flood,” and though “The Spine” doesn’t hit the same giddy highs as that album, the reunion seems to have paid off. Even if “The Spine” never seems totally inspired, it also never feels lackluster. John Linnell and John Flansburgh demonstrate the same distinctive dedication to strong song craft and curious lyrics as ever before.
