Chris Stamey

Travels in the South

There’s truth in advertising in the title of Chris Stamey’s latest album, his first in over a decade. Several of the songs are indeed about coming and going, the pleasures of arrival and the pitfalls of getting there. But the hip Southern alt-rock staple also fits in songs questioning notions of mortality and the existence of God, subjects that would seem much heavier if Stamey wasn’t such a deft master of jangle pop.

Take away: Southern pop
