A.C. Newman
The Slow Wonder
Carl Newman is such a consistent songwriter that his success with the New Pornographers seems more like good timing than anything else. After all, his former band, Zumpano, was just as good at rousing power pop, and his first solo release, “The Slow Wonder,” shows Newman is just as adept when he’s hogging the spotlight. But at 33 minutes, “The Slow Wonder” sometimes drags, not because Newman’s songs are lacking but because few tracks are as good as “Miracle Drug” and “On the Table.”
