The Paper Chase
God Bless Your Black Heart
With angst-ridden, lovetorn themes, The Paper Chase’s terse musical stylings and unsettling samples set it apart from both Cursive’s experimentation and Bright Eyes’ tear-streaked anthems. A magnificently disturbed mind in tow, singer and songwriter John Congleton strips down and spits out song after bitter song of strings and piano keys gone awry. “God Bless Your Black Heart” still manages to wind a tight lasso around the listener.
Take away: Alluring anguish
