The Forty-Fives
High Life High Volume
Good garage rock sounds like it was made as quickly and roughly as possible, a simple goal that’s deceptively hard to achieve. Most garage revivalists just don’t have the goods, aping half-familiar riffs and otherwise running strictly off the template set years ago by the “Nuggets” comps, but a handful of garage acts get everything right. Atlanta’s The Forty-Fives aren’t exactly remaking the wheel, and that’s entirely the point, as their third album “High Life High Volume” works like an exuberant time capsule from a more frivolous age. Granted, there’s just as much of the Stones in the songs as the Sonics and Seeds, but that leaves room for the likes of the soulful ballad “Too Many Miles” between breathless blasts such as “Bad Reputation” and “C’Mon Now Love Me.”
