Ozomatli
Street Signs
Ozomatli’s previous album, “Embrace the Chaos,” was released on Sept. 11, 2001, and, predictably, went mostly unheard. That disc pushed the Los Angeles collective in a slightly more commercial direction, and although Ozomatli now has an indie home (Concord Records), “Street Signs” isn’t any less commercial. The disc offers something for everyone, often all at once, from Latin grooves to Middle Eastern rhythms to funk, soul, rock and hip-hop. But as fun as the music often is, the group steeps its catchy melodies and dance-friendly beats with populist power-to-the-people, transforming “Who’s to Blame” and “Saturday Night” into pithy multicultural calls to arms.
