The Village Board this week approved a controversial mixed-use development and tax-increment financing district.

On a 5-1 vote, the board approved a TIF district near 95th Street and 51st Avenue that would include housing, retail and a multilevel parking deck for commuters. Some residents objected to the development, citing increased traffic due to more parking and the potential for additional retail space to hurt existing businesses.

Trustee Robert Streit, who cast the dissenting vote, urged the board to postpone or kill the project, because he said it does not conform to the village’s comprehensive plan.

The village must still reach agreements with Metra, which is developing the parking deck, and Oak Brook-based Mid-America Investment and Development Co., which has plans for retail space and condominiums, said Village Manager Joseph Faber.

Construction is expected to begin in November.
