Pedro the Lion
Achilles Heel
With their wimpy, wispy sad-sack songs, it’s a wonder Pedro the Lion got adopted by the usually higher-energy emo scene. This album, their fifth, proves the group deserves the extra attention. Sure, David Bazan’s songs can sometimes make Joy Division sound like a pick-me-up, but like the best masters of gloom, Bazan really knows how to make down-beat moaning and minor key strumming oddly uplifting. “The Fleecing” and “Foregone Conclusions” are morose little anthems for the indie-rock set.
