Bad Religion
Empire Strikes First
It’s shaping up to be a politically charged summer. Right on cue come agit-punks Bad Religion, firing a salvo against the Bush administration with their 13th studio set. The California sextet remains loud, fast, reliably tuneful, thoroughly informed and positively incensed after all these years. The precision brawn of the three-guitar attack and Brooks Wackerman’s whiplash drumming sets a napalm-fueled fire beneath singer Greg Gaffin, who, in true thinking-man’s-punk fashion, carries a tune as if he has much heavier things on his mind. For example: the agenda of the religious right (“Sinister Rouge”), news media biases (“Los Angeles Is Burning”) and the war on terror (“Let Them Eat War”).
