Sam Phillips

A Boot and a Shoe

Sam Phillips’ music has always fallen on the far side of quirky, but in the past few years she’s stripped way a lot of her eccentricities to produce some of her most beautiful songs to date. Phillips’ latest disc sounds like nothing short of a lost trove of Beatles “White Album” demos in various states of decoration, ornamented with only the sparest strum of acoustic guitar, sometimes strings, a bit of drums and the odd keyboard flourish. Phillips’ lyrics are disturbing and strange, but she delivers them in a winning, sly slur.

Take away: Beatles beauty
