The Gift of Gab
Fourth Dimensional Rocketships Going Up
Blackalicious has consistently been such a strong outlet for the incredibly gifted MC Gift of Gab that you wouldn’t think he’d feel the need to step out on his own with a solo album. Admittedly, this disc is more laid back than Gab’s usual music, with Blackalicious collaborator Chief Excel replaced by the more relaxed beat masters Vitamin D. and Jake One. Fortunately Gab remains in fine form, his rapid-fire monotone flow malleable enough to fit the mellower mood of “The Writz” and “Stardust.” It won’t make you forget about Gab’s great work with Blackalicious, but it’s a nice addition to his hip-hop resume.
